Sports Medicine Therapist

This policy provides coverage to Sports Medicine Therapists who specialize in performance enhancement utilizing evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation. Treatment includes teaching techniques to other therapists, athletes, their families and coaches. Who also can evaluate a persons ability to return to physical activity.

Sports Medicine Instructor

This policy provides coverage to Sports Medicine Instructors who specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating injuries related to participation in sports and/or exercise, specifically the rotation or deformation of joints or muscles caused by engaging in such activities. The sports medicine “team” includes specialty physicians, surgeons, athletic trainers, physical therapists, coaches, and other personnel, as well as, the athlete themselves. The primary focus of sports medicine is the rapid recovery of patients.

Rehabilitation Therapist

This policy provides coverage to Rehabilitation Therapists who help people with disabilities achieve their personal, career, and independent living goals through a form of vocational, correctional, or therapeutic retraining.

Rehabilitation Technician

This policy provides coverage to Rehabilitation Technicians who perform respiratory therapy duties. The rehabilitation technician assembles and operates numerous types of oxygen equipment.

Rehabilitation Counselor

This policy provides coverage to Rehabilitation Counselors who provide counseling to people with adjustment disabilities in vocational, personal, psychological and social situations.

Rehabilitation Assistant

This policy provides coverage to Rehabilitation Assistants who work as members of the health care team under the supervision of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Rehabilitation Assistants provide services to patients who have been sick or injured.

Recreational Therapist

This policy provides coverage to Recreational Therapists who plan, organize, and direct medically approved recreation programs for patients in hospital and other institutions. Who direct and organize activities such as sports, dramatics, games, and arts and crafts to assist patients to develop interpersonal relationships, to socialize effectively, and to develop confidence needed to participate in group activities. Who regulate the content of programs in accordance with the patients capabilities, needs and interests. Who instruct patients in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, concentration, and other activities.


This policy provides coverage to Physiotherapists whose primary concern is with the remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention carried out by licensed Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants.

Physical Therapist Assistant

This policy provides coverage to Physical Therapist Assistants who administer physical therapy treatment to patients, working under the direction of and as assistants to physical therapists. Who administer active and passive manual therapeutic exercise, therapeutic massage, and heat, light, sound, water, and electrical modality treatments, such as ultrasound, electric stimulation, ultraviolet, infrared, and hot and cold packs. Who administer traction to relieve neck and back pain, using intermittent and static traction equipment. Who instruct, motivate, and assist patients to learn and improve functions of daily activities.

Physical Therapist Aide

This policy provides coverage to Physical Therapist Aides who prepare patients for physical therapy treatment. Who assist physical therapists, or physical therapist assistants during administration of treatments, as well as, provide routine treatment. Who assist patients with dressing, undressing, and putting on and removing supportive devices, such as braces, splints, and slings, before and after treatments. Who secure patients into or onto therapy equipment. Who safeguard, motivate, and assist patients practicing exercise and functional activities. Who provide treatment, such as hydrotherapy, hot and cold packs, and paraffin baths.
